India and the United Kingdom decided on a new and transformational ‘Comprehensive Strategic Partnership’ in 2021
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with King Charles III of the United Kingdom on Thursday (December 19, 2024) and both of them reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and the UK, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said.
They exchanged views on the Commonwealth of Nations and the recently concluded Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa, the PMO added.
Discussions were also held on a number of subjects of mutual interest, including Climate Action and sustainability. “The Prime Minister expressed his appreciation for His Majesty’s sustained advocacy and initiatives on these issues and briefed him on the multiple initiatives undertaken by India,” the PMO stated.
They both exchanged greetings on the upcoming festive occasions of Christmas and the New Year. Prime Minister Modi conveyed his best wishes to the King for his good health and well being.
India and the United Kingdom decided on a new and transformational ‘Comprehensive Strategic Partnership’ during the India-UK Virtual Summit between Prime Minister Modi and then British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on May 4, 2021. They also agreed on a Roadmap 2030 to steer cooperation for the next 10 years.
Since then, several meetings have been held at the top levels of both governments to review progress on Roadmap 2030.
UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy visited New Delhi on July 24, 2024 and held wide-ranging discussions with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. Reviewing the Roadmap 2030, they expressed satisfaction on the progress achieved so far and agreed to look at its renewal, aiming at a heightened ambition for bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
Both sides also decided to further intensify bilateral collaboration in priority areas of trade and investment, defence and security, migration and mobility, IT/AI/Tech-centric areas, S&T, Innovation, climate and green energy.
While in New Delhi, the UK Foreign Secretary called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and met with National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval.
PM Modi welcomed the desire to conclude a mutually beneficial Free Trade Agreement (FTA). He also welcomed the understanding reached between the two sides to launch a Technology Security Initiative (TSI) focussed on new and emerging technologies.
The UK-India TSI encompasses crucial sectors ranging from critical minerals and semiconductors to artificial intelligence and quantum computing. The objective is to bring into sharper focus collaboration in critical and emerging technologies (CET) across priority sectors. The TSI will reinforce existing collaborative efforts in various technologies, broaden the mandates of existing mechanisms, and establish new mechanisms for cooperation.
The initiative is being coordinated by the National Security Advisors (NSAs) of both countries through existing and new dialogues. At the same time, a bilateral mechanism led by India’s Ministry of External Affairs and the UK government will promote trade in critical and emerging technologies.
