The French government has declared a state of emergency in Mayotte
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow and solidarity with France on Tuesday (December 17, 2024) following the devastation caused by Cyclone Chido in the French overseas territory of Mayotte. The powerful cyclone, with winds reaching up to 200 km/h, struck the island and neighbouring regions over the weekend, leaving a trail of destruction and loss.

In a post shared on social media platform X, PM Modi extended condolences to the victims and their families, reaffirming India's support for France during this challenging time.

“Deeply saddened by the devastation caused by Cyclone Chido in Mayotte. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. I am confident that under President @EmmanuelMacron’s leadership, France will overcome this tragedy with resilience and resolve. India stands in solidarity with France and is ready to extend all possible assistance,” the Prime Minister posted.

Cyclone Chido’s Impact
Cyclone Chido, described as the strongest storm to hit Mayotte in over 90 years, has caused widespread destruction on the island and surrounding archipelagos. Reports indicate that 22 people have been killed and more than 1,400 injured in Mayotte alone. Authorities fear the toll may rise as rescue operations continue and more areas are reached.

The cyclone hit Mayotte with wind speeds exceeding 200 km/h, flattening homes, uprooting trees, and leaving many areas submerged. Entire neighborhoods, particularly informal settlements housing undocumented migrants, were wiped out. Roads remain blocked, and emergency crews are struggling to access the worst-affected areas.

French Government's Response
The French government has declared a state of emergency in Mayotte and deployed additional resources to the territory. French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau described the cyclone’s aftermath as a “complete devastation,” with 70% of the population affected. The government has announced the deployment of 400 additional paramilitary personnel to assist the 1,600 already on the ground for relief and rehabilitation efforts.

In a crisis meeting on Monday night, French President Emmanuel Macron called the situation a “tragedy” and assured swift action. He also promised to visit Mayotte in the coming days to assess the situation firsthand and oversee recovery measures. Macron reaffirmed that France would restore essential services and ensure the safety of the residents.

The French government has imposed a nighttime curfew from 10:00 PM to 4:00 AM local time starting Friday to prevent looting and maintain security. Authorities have also prioritized restoring critical services, announcing that 50% of water supplies will be restored within 48 hours.

Cyclone Chido’s devastation extended beyond Mayotte. In neighboring Mozambique, 34 fatalities have been reported, with over 300 injured as the cyclone brought heavy rainfall and winds exceeding 160 km/h.

Mozambique’s National Institute of Risk and Disaster Management reported rainfall of nearly 250 millimeters (10 inches) within 24 hours, causing flash floods and widespread damage to homes and infrastructure.

In the Comoros archipelago, Cyclone Chido wreaked similar havoc, prompting President Azali Assoumani to declare a week of mourning for the lives lost. The country’s fragile infrastructure has sustained immense damage, exacerbating the challenges for local authorities.

India's Support and Global Solidarity
India’s prompt message of support highlights its growing role in international disaster response and diplomacy. PM Modi’s assurance to extend all possible assistance reflects India’s commitment to humanitarian aid and solidarity with global partners.

India has a strong record of supporting disaster-affected regions worldwide, particularly in the Indian Ocean region. From deploying disaster relief teams to providing emergency supplies, India has often stepped up to assist neighboring and allied nations in times of crisis.

Experts believe Cyclone Chido’s intensity underscores the growing impact of climate change, which contributes to warmer oceans and more frequent, severe storms. Cyclone Chido’s high wind speeds and devastating storm surges highlight the vulnerability of coastal communities and the urgent need for global climate action.

France has mobilized resources to deliver essential aid, including 20 tonnes of food and water supplies, which are set to arrive on Tuesday. Emergency teams continue search and rescue operations, with the priority being restoring water and power to the island.

International humanitarian organizations have also stepped in. Relief agencies are coordinating with local governments to address urgent healthcare needs, deliver medical supplies, and provide logistical support to affected communities.

The devastation caused by Cyclone Chido in Mayotte and neighboring regions has underscored the vulnerability of coastal and island communities to extreme weather events. As relief efforts continue, global solidarity and coordinated support remain essential to help affected regions recover and rebuild.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message of support highlights the enduring partnership between India and France, as well as India’s proactive stance in extending assistance to disaster-hit regions worldwide. Under President Emmanuel Macron’s leadership, France is poised to overcome this tragedy with resilience and resolve, backed by both domestic efforts and international support.
