Her family is exploring relevant options, the Ministry of External Affairs said
India is extending all help to Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya, who is facing the death sentence, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Tuesday (December 31, 2024). According to reports, the sentence has been approved by Yemen President Rashad al-Alimi and the execution is scheduled to take place within a month.
Priya has been in a jail in Yemen since 2017 for allegedly murdering a Yemeni national.
Responding to media queries on the issue, MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the Indian government was extending all possible help in the matter. Her family was also exploring relevant options, Jaiswal added.
“We are aware of the sentencing of Ms. Nimisha Priya in Yemen. We understand that the family of Ms. Priya is exploring relevant options. The government is extending all possible help in the matter,” he stated.
According to news reports on the case, Nimisha Priya was found guilty of killing a Yemeni national, Talal Abdo Mahdi, in 2017. She was sentenced to death by a trial court in Yemen in 2018.
The reports, citing local laws and customs, said she was scheduled to be executed within a month unless the victim’s family agreed to accept blood money from the family of the accused.
