Trilateral dialogue highlights need for coordinated efforts to ensure the prevention of illegal activities at sea
The Third India-France-Australia Trilateral Focal Points Meeting was convened on June 19, 2024, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing trilateral cooperation among these nations. During the discussions, the three nations reaffirmed their commitment to a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region. 
 
"India-France-Australia Trilateral Focal Points meeting held virtually. Discussions covered areas for furthering cooperation under the pillars of Maritime Safety and Security, Marine & Environmental cooperation, and Multilateral Engagement under this framework," Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal posted on, formerly Twitter. 
 
The meeting was attended by high-level representatives from the three countries. The Indian delegation was led by Piyush Srivastava, Joint Secretary (Europe West), and Paramita Tripathi, Joint Secretary (Oceania and Indo-Pacific). The French delegation was headed by Benoît Guidée, Director (Asia and Oceania) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while the Australian side was represented by Sarah Storey, First Assistant Secretary, South and Central Asia Division, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
 
The primary focus of the meeting was to assess the progress achieved under the three main pillars of trilateral cooperation: maritime safety and security, marine and environmental cooperation, and multilateral engagement. These pillars form the foundation of the collaborative efforts among India, France, and Australia in promoting stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
 
According to the MEA, they identified new proposals for furthering the trilateral cooperation including under the framework of the Indo Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI) and the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) mechanisms, Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) cooperation, and multilateral engagements.
 
Commitment to a Free, Open, and Inclusive Indo-Pacific
 
Throughout the meeting, India, Australia, and France reaffirmed their commitment to advancing shared values and working collaboratively towards a free, open, inclusive, and rules-based Indo-Pacific region. This reaffirmation underscores the nations' dedication to maintaining regional stability and fostering an environment of mutual trust and cooperation.
 
The trilateral meeting signifies a robust commitment to joint action in the Indo-Pacific region, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in addressing common challenges and advancing mutual interests. Through such engagements, the three nations aim to bolster their strategic partnerships and contribute to regional peace and prosperity.
