Congratulatung Rishi Sunak on becoming the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that he looks forward to working together and implementing Roadmap 2030.
After news came in of Sunak emerging victorious in the Conservatives Party leadership race on Monday, Prime Minister Modi tweeted, “Warmest congratulations @RishiSunak! As you become UK PM, I look forward to working closely together on global issues, and implementing Roadmap 2030. Special Diwali wishes to the 'living bridge' of UK Indians, as we transform our historic ties into a modern partnership.”
Apart from PM Modi, other Indian politicians, including Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, senior Congress leader and former Union Minister P Chidambaram, and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, also congratulated Sunak.
Southampton-born Rishi Sunak staged an astonishing political comeback in British politics just seven weeks after losing the previous Tory (Conservatives) leadership race.
Former UK Chancellor Sunak won because Penny Mordaunt withdrew from the race for the Tory leadership and was unable to garner the required 100 MP nominations. Sunak became the first Indian-origin prime minister of the UK, succeeding outgoing PM Liz Truss.
As the youngest British Prime Minister in 210 years, the former Chancellor of the Exchequer will move into 10 Downing Street after formally assuming office.
Sunak, the first Hindu Prime Minister of the UK, was chosen for the position on the auspicious date of Diwali, a major Hindu festival that symbolises the triumph of virtue over evil. Additionally, he is also the son-in-law of India billionaire N R Narayana Murthy.
