Since January 2022, India has handed over about $4 billion in assistance to Sri Lanka
As part of efforts to mitigate the economic crisis being faced by India's southern neighbor, Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Gopal Baglay on Sunday handed over humanitarian aid to 200 low-income families in the Trincomalee district of the debt-ridden island nation.
Speaking on the occasion, the High Commissioner said that India always stands with the Sri Lankan people.
He also greeted TNA leader MP Thiru R Sampanthan, who represented TNA leader MP Thiru R Sampanthan at the event.
The official Twitter account of the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka wrote, "High Commissioner handed over humanitarian assistance to 200 low income families in Trincomalee district. Exchanged greetings w TNA MP Thiru Kalaiyarasan who represented TNA leader MP Thiru R Sampanthan"
In another tweet, the High Commission also quoted the Indian High Commissioner as saying that India always stands with the Sri Lankan people. The high commission tweeted,
"HC: India stands w all the people of Sri Lanka at all times. India’s support to Sri Lanka has helped in facing the current situation and strengthened friendship and goodwill between the two countries," it said.
Since January of this year, the Indian government has handed over about assistance with about $4 billion to Sri Lanka, which is currently experiencing a crisis. India has been the largest donor of help to its southern neighbour this year, which is battling its worst economic crisis in more than seven decades and finding it difficult to pay for imports.
The 22-million-person nation has been dealing with shortages of basic necessities like gasoline, food, and medication for months after its foreign exchange reserves hit all-time lows, preventing imports and igniting previously unheard-of public discontent.
