With this, India has successfully delivered 33,500 MTs of wheat to the nation in need

India on Saturday dispatched another shipment of 3000 MT of wheat to Kabul, Afghanistan as humanitarian aid, with the country's already dire economic situation having been made worse by a powerful earthquake that killed over 1,000 people.

With the delivery of the most recent consignment of wheat, India and the World Food Programme (WFP) have successfully delivered 33,500 MTs of wheat to the nation in need.

In a tweet, Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said, "India sent next shipment of 3000 MTs of wheat today to Afghanistan. Our commitment to provide humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people remains steadfast. As on date, India has successfully completed shipment of 33,500 MTs of wheat to Afghanistan in partnership with WFP."

On February 22 this year, India had shipped the first consignment of 2,500 metric tons of wheat to Afghanistan through Pakistan. The shipment, which was transported by 50 trucks, arrived in Afghanistan’s town of Jalalabad on February 26.

On October 7 last year, India had sent Pakistan a proposal to transport 50,000 tonnes of wheat by land to the people of Afghanistan. On November 24, Pakistan responded favourably to this request. Following this, all parties worked out the modalities of how the shipments would be transported.

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit Afghanistan on June 22, leaving over 1,500 people injured and more than 1,000 dead. The Taliban government is having a hard time feeding a population that has been devastated by the deadliest natural disaster in years.
