The cash-starved island nation is facing a severe economic crisis

There was “unanimous support” on the need to stand with Sri Lanka in this difficult time, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Saturday after chairing a parliamentary consultative committee meeting on the situation in the neighbouring country.

Unanimous support on the need to stand with our neighbor in this difficult time," he tweeted after the meeting.

Ministers of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan, Meenakshi Lekhi and Rajkumar Ranjan Singh also attended the meeting.

The meeting came even as the cash-starved island nation continued to grapple with a severe economic crisis. Sri Lanka has been facing an acute shortage of food, fuel, and other essential items including medical supplies.

India has extended multi-pronged assistance to the people of Sri Lanka in the last few months.

The support from India ranges from economic assistance of close to USD 3.5 billion to helping secure Sri Lanka’s food, health, and energy security by supplying essential items like food, medicines, fuel, and kerosene.

On June 11, the Indian government had decided to extend a concessional Line of Credit (LOC) of USD 55 million to Sri Lanka for the procurement of Urea Fertilizer.
